God With Us: The Divine Presence In The Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-20 – “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'”

When you hear the Great Commission, are you astounded? Are you filled with joyful anticipation? Are you humbled? Are you confused or terrified?

Regardless of how we feel or think when we hear it, the Great Commission demands our attention and response. Why? Because it was given to us, the Church of Christ! It was given to you, to me, and all who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. We cannot ignore it. This is amazing! The Son of God, the Word made flesh, the King of the universe has entrusted us, a rag-tag bunch of humans who have been redeemed by His blood, to take His Gospel into all the world so that all people can know who God is and obey Him as the Creator and King.

This is a MASSIVE responsibility and calling! No wonder so many Christians turn a blind eye to this commission. How could we possibly accomplish this?

The bookends of the Great Commission reveal how we can accomplish the task of evangelizing the entire planet: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me”, and “behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age”. Jesus has all authority in heaven and earth. What He says always comes to pass. He has complete control in the universe, and He exercises His sovereign power over all things at every moment in time. He cannot be stopped and His perfect will can’t help but be accomplished, to the praise of His Glory! But Jesus does not stop there! He promises to be WITH US, forever, as we go out to accomplish this Great Commission. His unending presence assures protection, provision, and power. This truth should generate extreme confidence in our hearts. It should also propel us forward into immediate action.

So, knowing that the Supreme Ruler is by your side and He will never leave you, what role are you playing today in the Great Commission? Knowing that there is nothing to fear, what steps can you take to make the name of Jesus great among the nations?
